Overview

Sattal is perched at an altitude of 1370 meters above the sea level, is an interconnected group of seven freshwater lakes situated in the Lower Himalayan Range of Nainital District. These fresh water lakes are a home to more than 500 migratory and resident birds. These birds try to escape the cold of the upper Himalayan region by migrating to the lower Himalayas. One can easily spot different species of birds from the family of Barbets,  woodpeckers, pheasants, kingfisher, parakeets and many more. Out of more than 300 species of the butterflies found at Sattal includes Indian fritillary peacock pansy, blue peacock, Paris peacock, red-base Jezebel, red lacewing, yellow pansy, tawny Rajah, red Helen, large silver stripe, Indian oak leaf and thousands of others. Sattal is surrounded by dense forest of oak and pine trees that attracts lots of nature lovers from all over the world. It is one of the few unspoiled and unpolluted freshwater biomes in India. Apart from birding and nature walks, one can enjoy boating, angling, camping, adventure activities in and around Sattal lake.

Best Time to visit Sattal:

Being a birding destination, different species are sighted in different seasons. Winters are best to see Upper Himalayan Birds, which migrate to Sattal in cold months. In summer months, Sattal’s atmosphere is quite pleasant and enjoyable. Light woolen would require for late evenings in summer. It is best to visit the place between October to June.

Sattal is well connected and accessible by road from all major cities. Nearest popular cities are

Nainital: 30 kms

Haldwani: 22 kms

Delhi: 280 kms

BY TRAIN:

Nearest railway station is Kathgodam which is around 25 kms. From

here we can arrange transport for Ramgarh and other local sightseeing places.

BY AIR:

Delhi airport is around 280 kms from Pangot with frequent flights from all

over the world.

Pant Nagar airport is 85 kms, but flights at this airport are limited.

Dehradun airport is around 320 kms
