Gir National Park also known as Sasangir is the last abode of wild Asiatic lions in the world. Situated in Talala Gir, some 65 kilometres from Junagadh, it spans more than 1400 square kilometres consisting of more than 500 Asiatic lions, a population which was reduced to just handful of individuals a few decades back. Tourism season at Gir is from 16th October to 15 June every year. Along with lions, the national park consists good populations of leopards, jungle cat, spotted deer, sambar deer, nilgai, hyena, jackals and over 300 species of birds. The open scrub and deciduous forest makes the perfect setting for amazing wildlife sightings. Success of the national park goes to its hardworking forest staff that have saved such a majestic species from the brink of extinction.
