Located in the chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho Group of Monuments consists of Hindu and Jain temples and area among the UNESCO’s World Heritage sites in the India. The temples are famous for their nagara-style architectural symbolism and their erotic sculptures. Built between 950-1050 AD, Khajuraho currently has 25 temples spread across 6 sq km. The location is accessible via train and road with highways connecting to the state capital of Bhopal. It is interesting to see that all temple except faces sunrise and layout of temples integrate masculine and feminine deities and symbols highlight the interdependence. Almost all Hindu temple in Khajuraho follow grid geometrical design called vastu-purusha-mandala in their architecture which consists of three important components – Mandala means circle, Purusha is universal essence at the core of Hindu tradition, while Vastu means the dwelling structure. The temples divided into three groups, The Eastern, Western and Southern, The Archaeological survey of India maintain guided tours at the site. It is also famous for the Khajuraho Dance Festival that is held every year in February.
Best time to visit Khajuraho is from October to March when pleasant weather conditions will keep you comfortable during local sightseeing. Every year Dance Festival also organized in the month of Feb.
High Temperature in April to June makes it very tough for sightseeing tour. These months are best avoided.
If you are looking for best deals and discounts then July to September is the best time but the weather remains humid around this time and most of the times your local sightseeing plans may hamper due to rainfall.
Khajuraho is well connected by road to other cities in Madhya Pradesh. NH 75 connects Khajuraho to Gwalior (280 kms), Bhopal (375 Kms) , Indore (565 kms), Jhansi (230 kms) and Mahoba (70 kms).
Located at a distance of 4 kms Khajuraho railway station is connected to only selected cities. Mahoba is the nearest major railhead which is located at a distance of 60 kms. From Mahoba railway station, trains from all over India are accessible.
Khajuraho has its own domestic airport which is well connected to major cities of India like Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad etc. From the airport the city is a 3 kms distance away. Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknowis the nearest International airport located at a distance of 340 kms.
